Professor Susumu Yamaguchi, University of Tokyo

will speak on:

Myths about Japanese Self-Esteem and Modesty

Japanese self-esteem and modesty has been misunderstood by Westerners including researchers. Although Japanese show low self-esteem especially as measured by Rosenberg's self-esteem scale, it does not mean that Japanese have lower self-esteem than Westerners. Japanese modesty is underlying Japanese expressed lower self-esteem. I will present empirical evidence indicating that Japanese do not mean low or negative self-esteem when they show modesty. Universality of modesty will be discussed as well.
